artemak - Archives for Techniques and Materials of Contemporary Artists

ARTEMAK2.jpg

artemak is a project concerning the conservation and restoration of contemporary art. In the early stages, Erich Gantzert-Castrillo’s book, the title of which has also been used as the name of the project, was digitalized and its contents transferred to a database. In the second, current phase, interviews with artists relating to conservation were transcribed and data relating to materials compiled and tagged in order to create a comprehensive ontology with explanations and specialized knowledge concerning technical and methodical issues as well as those relating to materials science. Working in cooperation with further partners, an online lexicon is expected to follow.
In accordance with specific requirements, a Wiki-based online platform was developed that can be expanded in the future, the purpose of which is to make available specialist knowledge concerning conservation suited to both research and training contexts as well as to use by experts and other interested parties. The resulting lexicon is embedded in a broad discourse relating to the conservation and transmission of art since the 1960s and therefore touches on questions of conservation, including those arising at Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design.
