Compare

Compare.png

The BFH research project Compare dealt with the conservation of complex digital objects such as operating systems and artworks involving specific applications (programs) as well as context-specific mechanisms. With a view to conserving these so that they remain accessible in the long term, technical migration and transfer processes were compared and the sustainability of the relevant technology explored.
While on a semantic level knowledge of cultural history and of aesthetics is required for the effective handing down of artworks, computer science requires the logging and description of basic, technical components. In this respect, interfaces, including with reference to software, are of particular relevance. Using specially selected, artistic case studies, aspects relating to both content and technology were explored within the framework of Compare, with the aid of a technical analysis of the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) and through the description of interfaces between applications and the required software.
