Heinrich Klotz Archive

The Heinrich Klotz Archive contains almost 1000 diapositives from photographs taken during research trips conducted by the founding rector of Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. Aside from documenting countless buildings and building complexes, which in some cases no longer exist today, as well as miscellaneous ephemera, the photographs made a significant contribution to the development of the concept of ‘second modernity’, a term Heinrich Klotz used in his theoretical work.
The passing of the archive into the possession of Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design is of great benefit, not just to the scholarly study of fine art. The archive is also integral to keeping alive among future generations of students the memory of Heinrich Klotz - as the founding rector of the university, as an architectural historian and as a commanding presence in the museums sphere. In view of which, the Heinrich Klotz Archive is invaluable as an intellectual stimulus.

Rome

These pictures, taken in 1967/1968, match the aesthetics of quite traditional architecture tourism. Themes are for example the Vatikan, the Pantheon, Il Gesù and the Forum Romanum.

New York

In a way, the New York pictures from 1969, 1980, 1981, 1982 and 1989 resemble landscapes - the position of the photographer can be identified by reading the topography of the buildings only.

Barcelona

Far away from the masses of tourists in 1980, Heinrich Klotz takes pictures of an apartement house by Rius Camps and of the north facade of a magnificent old customs building. Sagrada Familia is not a landmark here.

Alsfeld

Aside of the routes of architecture tourism, Heinrich Klotz takes pictures of the carcass town Alsfeld in 1979. Already in Frankfurt am Main, Klotz was interested in the oldest carcass house of the city, Schellgasse 8 (1291/1292).
