In cooperation with the City of Karlsruhe’s public archive, work has commenced to make further collections, some of them digitalized, available to the public, in addition to that of the Sport Archive. As such, it is not only a matter of inputting the digitalized pictorial material together with associated metadata into a database conducive to online use. In addition, a platform, the so-called City lexicon, is to be created, which will include descriptive texts that embed the archived items in their historical context. Only then can an overall picture of local history be pieced together.
The City lexicon will bring together archived items with classic finding aids and enable the description and referencing of more general trends. With the future expansion of the open platform, the City’s digital memory is expected to emerge. Various functions relating to content and to theme will also be offered. These are, on the one hand, intended to correlate with various specialist areas and, on the other, programmed to keep a record of results.
One of the most significant photographic collections among the City’s archival collections, the so-called Herrmann Schmeiser Picture Archive, supplied the platform with its first test case.
